I have similar status sensing problem.
I have not used the sensor yet but did some testing with the bare wires. I connected them to Analog 2 and GND and programmed the arduino the same and the app.
When the wires are NOT together the app says CLOSED, when i touch them and refresh the app, I get nothing...1 or 2 times when i touched the wires they gave me a unknown status....I am using the SEEED ethernet and SEEED Relay.
The door open/close works fine, just trying to get the sensor going now.
